I'm glad President Harding saw fit to commute Deb's prison sentence and release him. God knows what our current leadership would do to the poor man. We live in scary times.
I read this just as I have been thinking and reading about suffragists jailed for picketing at the whitehouse in 1917. And I.W.W. "internment camp" based on alien enemies act. So many echoes to our time. And so good to know more about Debs' later life.
Yesterday I read about a young man who mentioned the tragedy in Gaza during a graduation speech at NYU. His diploma has been withheld until the college decides how to punish him.
Loved this history about Debs and how he stood up for what was right and did finally get released from prison. It's such a shame we can't voice our opinions without having problems. I always try to agree to disagree and stay friends with my friends.
Thanks Jack. Deb’s stood for the dignity of service workers. I admire his conviction.

I agree.

I'm always amazed how many people, siblings and friends, know nothing about this horrible event. Thanks. Jack.
A great and timely subject, beautifully written, with perfect quotes. Thank you!
Thanks, Martha. I wish it was not so timely.
Oh, Jack, the perfect piece for right now in this country. thank you once again.
Debs said, "Intelligent discontent is the mainspring of civilization.”
This nation needs reminders of this man. Heck we need another Eugene Debbs!
I agree 100 percent. We have to do our best to be the same.
