I have only seen one president in the flesh — I glimpsed Lyndon Johnson riding along a street in New York on his way to Bobby Kennedy’s funeral in 1968.
Thanks, Michael. I believe that all the elements beyond hydrogen and helium were generated inside stars and blown everywhere in the explosion of supernovae, as Joni said.
I remember that day with the LBJ drive-by. Your brother Bob and I were there to pick you up from Columbia and drive you home. You were fresh off some massive protests by the SDS. Fun times. I wish today's generation would wake up and storm Washington DC but their to busy looking at their phones. As for your article, it has sent me reeling back into the Existential Void!
Very good Jack and I agree with Joni Mitchell, do the best we can while we're blessed to be on this earth and for heaven's sake, be kind(not so much of that anymore)
Jack, did you know that Basin and Range set me on my path? I corresponded with McPhee a couple of times and then retraced Hutton's footsteps in Scotland in 1983. An angular unconformity tells the whole story. Hell, if I could write, I could have written this post! Nice work.
Thanks, Steve. I didn't know about your interest in geology, but thinking about much of your work, I can see something of it there. McPhee always had a great balance of the personal and the technical and he could make any subject interesting (of course, he's still alive at 94).
Holy Cow, Jack! I love this perspective, both your facts and your jokes. This made my day something other than depressing.

Jack, you sure are good at giving us perspective, I wish I felt more optimistic!
It's a time of worries, everyone feels it . . .
Wonderful reflection
