Last week, the global governing body for track and field announced that athletes who win gold medals at this year’s Olympics in Paris will receive prizes of $50,000. This marks another shovelful of dirt on the grave of amateur athletics. Although the idea was always a myth, there seemed something noble about competing just for fun. In fact, amateurism restricted competition and gave rise to widespread cheating. The rule was still strictly enforced through the 1960s, at least in some countries.
Haven't heard about Billy Mills in a long time, but I don't recall ever hearing about his background. Thanks for this and for including links to the video and the nonprofit he founded.
I remember that race and was thrilled Billy Mills dough deep and won the gold. Then i was petrified that a certain cross country coach (Gary Thompson) had also seen the race and would increase our "fartlek" training. He did!
I never heard of Billy Mills but so happy that you sent To Heal a Broken Soul. I loved this story and happy Bill is still with us. Thanks again Jack for the great history
Oh Jack, such a moving story and a reminder to keep working for something bigger than ourselves
